The fact that folks here are really behaving like this is a meaningful gesture is so ****ing baffling. EA literally went out of its way to scrub his name out of their games two decades straight, but this thread is making it look like they've donated millions. It's pure ****ing insanity. It is the very definition of slacktivism. It would be more fair when they had said nothing in any way. Instead, they're gonna push out a bullshit PR announcement about how they stand together with all the dark community and then in a couple months turn around and sell a product comprising an organization that has a history of stifling and punishing black voices. I never mentioned"Let us attack a company for doing the right thing." Actions speak louder than words. You can remain optimistic of matters looking up, which I frequently am. If your buddy hurts your feelings, then they must regain your trust.
Wait, why don't you? If a buddy of mine hurt me and then made an effort to be nice I'd absolutely want to tell them I appreciate their efforts. Positive reinforcement is a great thing. It helps people behave better, who's to say it can not create a corporation behave better also? It is worth rewarding them for it like it is well worth rewarding a problem kid for doing their best to get a day. The difference is you positively reinforce ACTION, not words. EA (and people generally ) should not encourage black people for any reason beyond the fact that it is the right thing to do. Benefits come from great behaviour, you should not be on good behavior for those added benefits. Once I see EA donate to the causes or implement initiatives to help out black developers or items of that type, then I'll praise them. We just should require a high standard and quit allowing firms off the hook so easily. I'm of the mindset which offset civilization is largely bad and people should be invited to change and enhance. But we should not let ourselves to be performed by companies who are, at the close of the day, trying to remove all barriers in the means of getting our cash. I have been burnt by false promises a lot of times.
Benefits come from good behavior, you should not be on good behavior for those benefits. "Everybody should only do the ideal thing" is a naive expectation. And I believe this is true even for individuals too: if you want someone to act in a moral way the best way to do that is to give them the right incentives and rewards to make behaving morally the best and most attractive option for them. If you do not then your society will probably be unstable. This is where I see this debate breaking down. Corporations aren't people, they do not have any built-in moral instincts. If they behave , it's because they gain, there is not any other motive. Either because there's pressure internally from their employees to behave in ways consistent with the morals and beliefs of the employees, or external pressure from consumers or governments. Once I visit EA donate to the causes or implement initiatives to assist out black developers or things of that sort, then I'll praise them. We only should demand a higher standard and quit allowing companies off the hook easily.
